CHAPTER TWENTY-FIVE

Katana brushed the brown and copper hair off Griffin’s forehead, cradled his stubbly cheeks in her hands, and touched her lips to his. It was meant to be a kiss goodbye. A small expression of gratitude for all he’d done in getting her to this point. A thank you for the necklace, for having her back in the race, for being her teammate and, dare she say it, her friend. But when his lips pressed hard against hers and he opened his mouth to her, heat sparked and reawakened her heart. Tired aching muscles tingled as they came alive.

Most men’s kisses reeked of dominance and arrogance. Griff’s reflected something else, a longing, a need, as if he wanted her and feared letting go, or perhaps he feared death and, in desperation, seized the moment like a drowning man seized his last breath.

Whatever his feelings, she didn’t want this moment to end. She wanted to press her body against his and kiss him until her lips hurt and damn the consequences. But that line of thinking was dangerous in the survival race.

Griff needed to die.

Now.

In a quick move, she stepped behind him, slipped a forearm bone against his carotid artery, pressed her head against his to prevent movement, and grabbed her wrist to cinch up tight on the sleeper hold.

He clutched her arm but didn’t pry it off.

“Eight seconds, Griff.”

The reference to the cave was more to reassure him than it was to state the speed in which it took to cut off the oxygen supply to the brain.

His fingers released their grip and slid off.

His body slackened.

His weight fell on her arms. She didn’t let go of his unconscious body. She didn’t stop squeezing. Death would come quietly now.

Regardless that it had been planned, taking Griff’s life weighed heavy.

What if the worse happened? What if Cavy didn’t, or couldn’t, reawaken him?

A lump formed in her chest. Tears threatened.

What was wrong with her? No man’s death had affected her like this. Not even Cam’s. Caring kills, he had said. He was right. A little piece of her was dying right along with the man in her arms.

So much for guarding her heart better next time.

She squeezed tighter. She’d be damned if she would cry while the whole world watched.

A deep bang of the gong signaled the race’s end. The lingering ring reverberated inside her chest.

She did it. She won the regional world championship.

Too bad first place struck her less than thrilled.

Maybe she’d be in a more celebratory mood after Griff reawakened.

Gently, she laid his head on the snow. “See you soon, Griff.”

On her knees, she plucked the black pennant out of the ground and raised it in victory.
